Afro-Peruvian Dance, 1st Grade

This residency is an introduction to Afro-Peruvian culture through its music, people, and dance. In this residency, Mentor Artist Carmen Román will lead students through an exploration of traditional and contemporary Afro-Peruvian instruments, learn new rhythms, and practice a variety of different dances.

Carmen Román

Afro-Peruvian Dance and Creative Movement
Carmen is a dancer, choreographer, educator, filmmaker, and emerging scholar. She was raised both in Lima, Peru, and in the Bay Area. As a choreographer, her work is deeply rooted in Afro-Peruvian dance vocabulary and also uses movements inspired by other dances of the African Diaspora and modern dance using her practice as an art form and a vehicle for self-expression.
